you're contortin my cognitive processes like a sedative
recitative reflections used to purge these dread affections
since affections are afflictions and I'm fixed to fight this sickness of heart

Choreiomancer      There's something magical about school dances. There has to be. It's there in the preparations, the hours of talking and dressing and changing and changing again, the application of makeup, the architecture of hair, the waiting and waiting and arriving and the hasty intake of breath before you, or you and your cadre of friends (banishing the fear with numbers and belonging), step through the doors into a gymnasium or a tent or a science lab transformed into something dark, starred with plastic light and throbbing like the artery of a giant with the beat of pop music. To Snow I never was fascinated by the snow so much as last night. Below the window it fell upon lawns, pavements, people pale with lamplight; but through the casement in the study I could only see a dalmatian in negative, light white shards spiraling earthward through the void.

That afternoon the gray clouds were a frustrated face above the early spring greens and browns of the park where I ran. As if choking back tears, these granite billows let out only the stray drop. But eventually the clouds gave into themselves and loosed their rain, flooding earth and sky with cold blue lament. But it was not until I returned home that evening that teardrops

I look and listen, twist and moan,
afraid of all I think I see.
The dæmons writhe beneath my bones—
they whisper, and behind my eyes
I feel the growling hunger grow.

to her red footsteps I am blind.

tho' it's no longer than my arm.

we do what we can to get by lives intact
but we lack in reverence, locked in severance
from what's inside, from what's up higher
our souls lie alight on a funeral pyre

about sellin' out for glory and lust and gold
see, Mammon's the daemon who damns you to dreamin'
of wealth and temptation—unhealthy sensations
but Mammon in Heaven couldn't see past his feet
'cuz they got gold set in beneath on the streets
our souls we are losin' to golden illusions
we're lost in the frost and cold and confusion
but trust the Divine, uncorrupted in mind
leave your lust to gather dust and with justice align
praise the Beneficent—Heaven, we're livin' this
whenever we give reverence, love, and forgivëness
we ain't motivated by future reward
we birth God on earth so that truth is restored
understand the eternal, forsake all your fear
bring your hand to ya sternum and say, "God is HERE."

I sing tenor in the Phillips Academy Gospel Choir. When we began rehearsing "He Reigns," a hip-hop-themed gospel song, I asked the choir director whether I could write a rap verse to add to the song. Here it is!
